BIG PICTURE THINKING:  An Essential Quality Of An Effective LeaderRegister Now

There is one essential quality of all effective leaders:  the ability to be a “big picture” strategic thinker.  In essence, big picture thinkers have a strategic perspective whereby they do not think of themselves, but see beyond themselves.

By contrast, small picture thinkers will look at activities with a focus on, “what’s in it for me?” and “what will I get out of it?”  If it doesn’t serve their immediate ends, then why would they bother—there’s nothing in it for them.

For example, a big picture thinker will think in terms having of the value of being part of an event like the ELO Forum, of having a presence at the event, of the importance of connecting with other people, the value of making a difference by collectively showing with other Christian marketplace leaders the importance of getting together and making a stand to the broader community.

Big picture thinkers will get involved in groups and movements that can impact society as whole, whether think tanks, NPOs or industry association.

To be a big picture strategic thinker is to have a sense of your ability to wield a positive influence.  Few people can do that—but effective leaders can.

Big picture thinkers look at ways to contribute, rather than take, how they can contribute rather than benefit—in short, they think of how to serve rather than be served.  A small picture thinker will focus on how they can be served and what they can get out of something.
