 People - John Leder Square

John Leder, president Edmonton-based Supreme Group, Canada’s largest private steel construction and fabrication firm. The company employs more than 1,000 workers at plants across Western Canada and the Pacific Northwest. Its long list of key projects includes Vancouver’s new Port Mann Bridge, the Vancouver Convention Centre, the expansion at Edmonton International Airport, the Bow Tower in Calgary and numerous big oilsands, potash and diamond mine projects.

Supreme started out with John and his wife Sally in 1972. It was not always smooth sailing in the early years. Supreme’s transformation to a major company began in the early 1980s, when it won a major contract to build the new Alberta Research Council campus on Edmonton’s south side. But it wasn’t until 2003 that the firm made the deal that transformed Supreme into an industry giant, by acquiring Canron Steel’s plants in Western Canada and Portland, Oregon. Over the past decade, the company’s staff count has gone from a few hundred to 1,000-plus. There were many challenges and setbacks along the way. “We toughed it out and we believe the Lord provided,” says John Leder. “And that’s the story of our business.” He points out that he has always tried to run his business on Christian principles.

The Leder family gives back to the community to many causes, local and international, through their family foundation, believing it is their responsibility to share as the Lord has blessed them. They have been supporters of The King’s University for a long time.
