People - Lorna DueckLorna Dueck is the host and executive producer of Context with Lorna Dueck, and president of Media Voice Generation, the Canadian charitable organization that produces the weekly broadcast. Context with Lorna Dueck explores current affairs from a Christian perspective. Presenting “life beyond the headlines,” the half-hour television program airs on seven TV networks.

A popular television personality and public speaker, Lorna works extensively in Canada's non-profit and charitable sector. She is a regular commentary writer on faith and public life in Canada's leading national newspaper, The Globe and Mail.

Prior to her work in messaging the Christian story through media, she worked as a freelance journalist for Winnipeg Free Press and CBC Radio. She began her media career as a news reporter with Golden West Broadcasting and CKX Television and Radio in Manitoba. For eight years Lorna was co-host of Canada’s daily Christian TV program, 100 Huntley Street.

A graduate of Tyndale University College (Bachelor of Religious Studies), Lorna has studied journalism and writing at Red River Community College and the University of Manitoba. Lorna holds an honourary doctorate in Christian Ministry from Trinity Western University, and is currently pursuing her Master’s degree in Evangelism and Leadership from Wheaton College. Lorna and her husband Vern have raised a son and daughter.

A winner of Canadian Church Press and Word Guild Awards, Lorna was presented with the Leading Women Award for her outstanding contributions to the fields of media and communications. And in 2009, she was awarded the "Distinguished Christian Leadership Award" from Providence College and Seminary in Manitoba. In 2012 Lorna was awarded the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal for her contribution to Canadian Society.

TOPIC:  “Using Biblically-Grounded Entrepreneurial Skills for High-Impact Investing”

BIO:  Dr. Dato Kim Tan is a successful biotech entrepreneur, global social impact pioneer and a Jubilee-inspired advocate of changing how Christian entrepreneurs can make a difference around the globe. Kim grew up in Malaysia, lives in the UK, and travels around the world, particularly to investment projects throughout Africa and Asia.  Dato Kim is the Chairman of SpringHill Management Ltd (www.springhiluk.com), a fund management company specializing in life sciences and social venture capital investing. He is the Founder Chairman of Inqo Investments, an impact investment company in South Africa and a partner and advisor in a number of social venture capital funds including Springhill Equity Partners, Novastar Ventures, Truestone Impact Investments and Garden Impact Investments. He was the founder Chairman of the NCI Cancer Hospital in Malaysia and the former chairman of Surrey & Hants Innovation Growth Team, a UK government organization supporting high growth companies in the south of England.  He is a board member of the APEC Life Science Forum and a Council Member of the University of Surrey.

Dato Kim is the inventor of sheep monoclonal antibodies. He has a PhD in biochemistry, and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine in 1997. He was elected an Honorary Member of The 48 Group Club (UK) in 2005 in recognition of his role in developing relationships with China.  Dato Kim is the co-founder of Transformational Business Network (TBN) (www.tbnetwork.org) is a network of over 2,000 business and professional people that bring community transformation through sustainable business solutions to poverty.  TBN is involved in 85 projects and has created over 20,000 jobs.  TBN projects include the Kuzuko Game Reserve (South Africa) and the Hagar Social Enterprise Group (Cambodia). TBN members and partners include entrepreneurs, business and financial professionals, technical specialists, social investors and people from many other fields that want to use their skills and resources to benefit the poor and marginalized.  He is an advisory board member of a number of organizations including PovertyCure, Sustainia and the Africa Health Fund. He is a trustee of the Centre for Enterprise, Markets and Ethics, Oxford (www.theceme.org).  He co-authored the book Fighting Poverty through Enterprise:  The Case for Social Venture Capital with Lord Brian Griffiths, the Vice-Chairman of Goldman Sachs. He is a former director of Saracens Rugby Club.  He also wrote a book titled, Jubilee Gospel which starts with the Old Testament institution of Jubilee and traces related themes through the rest of the Bible.

DESCRIPTION:  Geoff will share an update on initiatives led by Christian entrepreneurial leaders in places as diverse as Morocco, South Africa, London, Indonesia and China.  With his non-stop travel schedule on behalf of WEA, few people are better positioned than Geoff to highlight entrepreneurial development in the far corners of the world.

BIO:  Dr. Geoff Tunnicliffe is CEO/ Secretary General, World Evangelical Alliance, a network of churches in 128 nations that have each formed an evangelical alliance and over 100 international organizations joining together to give a world-wide identity, voice, and platform to more than 600 million evangelical Christians. Geoff spends a considerable amount of time traveling, mentoring leaders of Evangelical Alliances, speaking at global conferences, conducting media interviews, meeting with government and faith leaders and interacting with institutions such as United Nations, G-8 and World Bank. Building evangelical collaboration and unity, and building a strong voice for the marginalized, the poor and the persecuted are his priorities. As part of Geoff's role, he works with a global network of entrepreneurs and business leaders committed to innovation and positive change throughout the marketplace and society.

TOPIC: “Reflections on Entrepreneurial Succession:  The Experience of Trojan Technologies”

BIO: Marv is President of Trojan Technologies.  Trojan is the global leader in the supply of ultraviolet light (UV) based treatment systems for municipal water and wastewater treatment, with over 8,500 successful installations in more than 60 countries.  Trojan also provides UV–based treatment solutions for industrial, commercial and consumer applications, as well as technologies to enable space and energy-efficient filtration and energy recovery from bio-solids. Trojan has 750 employees, with global headquarters in London, Ontario, Canada, and with offices in 14 countries around the world.

Marv joined Trojan in 1988 as Sales and Marketing Manager, serving in this position for 5 years, during which time he helped to establish a global network of over 100 industry partnerships as the foundation for developing broad acceptance and support of UV-based solutions globally.  In 1993, Marv was appointed Executive Vice-President of Trojan.  He provided global leadership for Sales, Marketing and Customer Service, and led the business development activities of the company, resulting in three acquisitions and two strategic investments into adjacent markets.  He joined the Trojan Board of Directors in 1998.  Marv was appointed as President of Trojan in 2003.  With the support of the Trojan Board of Directors, Marv led the transition of Trojan from a publicly traded company (TSX:TUV) to an acquisition by Danaher Corporation (NYSE:DHR) in 2004.

Prior to joining Trojan, Marv spent 8 years with World Renew, an international relief and development agency.  Marv worked as a project and program manager on water–related and infrastructure development projects in Bangladesh, India & Haiti.  He served on the Board of Directors of World Renew (formerly CRWRC) for a total of six years, three years as Canadian Board Chair.  Marv earned a B. Sc. in Water Resources Engineering from the University of Guelph in 1977, and a Masters of Environmental Engineering from the University of Western Ontario in 1983.

Topic:  The How & Why of Innovation:  Lessons from Global Entrepreneurial Leaders

DESCRIPTION:  For over six years Karl has been doing weekly interviews of entrepreneurial billionaires and corporate titans for The Globe and Mail, Canada’s National Newspaper. He has also been doing the weekly Rethinking Leadership blog for Forbes Magazine for over two years where his thoughts on leadership have received hundreds of thousands of views.  Dr. Moore will assess the perspectives on meaning at work of the many leaders he has interviewed.

BIO:  Karl Moore, Ph.D. has been ranked among the top twenty management thinkers in the world.  He is renowned for his engaging presentations.  He brings together theory and practice:  he is widely respected as for his academic research and writings and he is equally comfortable hobnobbing with CEOs and high profile entrepreneurs running billion-dollar companies.  Karl is Associate Professor, Desautels Faculty of Management & Associate Professor, Dept. of Neurology & Neurosurgery, Faculty of Medicine McGill University.  He is also an Associate Fellow, Green Templeton College, Oxford University.

After completing his MBA at the University of Southern California and Ph.D. at the Schulich School, York University, Karl worked for eleven years in sales and marketing management positions in the high technology industry with IBM, and Hitachi.   Before McGill he taught at Oxford University for five years.  He came to McGill to work with Henry Mintzberg, they co-direct McGill’s Advanced Leadership Program.  Karl has won numerous teaching awards, including in 2002 he won the Faculty teaching award at the MBA level.  He has done extensive teaching at the McGill Faculty of Medicine including as a founder of the Leadership Development Program for leaders at the MUHC and McGill Medical.

He has taught extensively in leading executive education/MBA programs around the world including: Oxford, Cambridge, INSEAD, Cornell, Duke, LBS, Skolkovo (Moscow), RSM (Holland), Queens, McGill, IIM Bangalore (India), Renmin (Beijing), and Darden. An active consultant Dr. Moore has worked with Air Canada, British Airways, IATA, Lufthansa, Nokia, IBM, Volvo, HP, Motorola, Accenture, Morgan Stanley and other firms.  Dr. Moore's publications include over two hundred articles, books, chapters in books, and papers. His research has been published in a number of leading journals.

TOPIC:  “From the Locker Room to the Boardroom:  Key Character Traits for Entrepreneurial Success.”

DESCRIPTION:  What separates those who succeed from those who don’t in the realm of entrepreneurship?  It starts with personal and group leadership.  Ryan will focus on three key character traits that are vital for effective leadership.  Based on his unique experiences from the locker room to the board room, he will share his insights on key character traits such as resilience, the will to win and the hungry spirit.

BIO: Ryan Walter played more than 1,000 games over 15 seasons in the National Hockey League. Drafted second overall by the Washington Capitals in 1978, Ryan was named the youngest NHL captain in his second of 4 seasons, played 9 seasons and won a Stanley Cup with the Montreal Canadiens, and returned to his home town to play his last 2 seasons for the Vancouver Canucks. He was named Team Canada Captain in the World Junior Tournament, was selected to play in the NHL All-Star game and for Team Canada in 3 World Championships, became a Vice-President of the National Hockey League Players Association, and was honoured as NHL Man of the Year. Ryan has been inducted into the BC Hockey Hall of Fame, the Burnaby Sports Hall of Fame, named to the 30 all-time Washington Capitals’ Dream team, the top 50 all-time BCHL players and the top 100 Montreal Canadiens in 100 years.

Ryan has a Master of Arts Degree in Leadership/Business. He is the author of 5 books, the creator of the board game Trade Deadline Hockey, and a regular contributor to both online and print magazines and newspapers. Ryan serves on the Hockey Canada Foundation’s Board of Directors and is a member of the Seton Hall Stillman School of Business Leadership Advisory Council.  Ryan won a Gold Medal as Head Coach of Canada's National Women's Hockey Team, has been an Assistant Coach of the Vancouver Canucks, co-founder and president of two start-up companies, a TV and radio hockey analyst, and a hockey adviser and actor for both television and movies, and the President of a professional hockey team. Ryan continues to inspire teams, businesses, and organizations such as McDonald’s Canada, Wolters Kluwer, and Schindler Elevator, across North America and beyond, to become their very best.
