Peter Irvine - Business as Mission

I believe my Christian faith impacts me in terms of learning, being open, listening and spending time with God. I listen as other people speak. God is always speaking into my life. I say to business people that I can sit in church and I don't know when it is coming, often when someone is preaching, or maybe during worship, God births an idea in me, related to what I am doing, or something new. That doesn't mean I am not listening to the sermon but this is a time when He has my attention that He can speak. It is not only then. I have had inspiration from movies that aren't Christian movies even though I don't watch that many but something leaps out at me prompted by something in the movie. My faith and my relationship with God is birthing ideas and giving me solutions to problems and difficult people.

I have learned to wait and not respond quickly to terrible e-mails or phone calls. I have learned to wait because in my quiet time God might birth something on how to deal with that situation.

I have realized that God has a plan for me and it doesn't stop until the day I die. Too many Christians are hanging around waiting until Jesus comes back. The message is clear in the Bible that we have got to get on with what God is giving us to do. We might finish a career but God has the next stage of our life and he is not finished with us until we are dead. So therefore we can move into helping people, serving in the community and serving in church. God has a plan for you and it could be totally different than what you are thinking after you finish your current career. That is only a stage of life. The world may pension us off, but God’s plans have only just started - a lot of people get encouraged by that message. So God has a plan until I die that my faith and what I have learned actually can be an influence to other people in their decision making, not me telling them what to do, but they can get some quality input into their decision making.

I realized a few years ago that if I am called to business then that is my ministry. Too many people want to get out of business and go into full time ministry—but that is our ministry. That is when God opened the doors for me to go and speak to the Muslim, Turkish and then the Israeli chambers of commerce in Sydney. When I realized that business is my ministry God opened the door for me to be used.
